As a corporate lawyer working on a highly confidential deal, you may be asked to participate in the time-honored tradition of bestowing a “project name” on the transaction to disguise it. Impressive project names have the added benefit of making those involved feel like others would actually care about the transaction if only they knew about it. Most project names are a play on the name of one of the companies. For example, if you are working with a company named “Firestarter, Inc.”, you might suggest “Burn Notice” as the project name. But why stop there? The truly thoughtful associate will, to ensure total secrecy, quickly establish call-signs for all others working on the deal and immediately begin using them in correspondence – “Wild Master, Please find the draft agreement attached. Best, Ace in the Hole.”
